The Senate has turned down an amendment to Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Amendment Bill that aimed to make the electronic transmission of election results compulsory.
The proposed change would have mandated INEC presiding officers to transmit polling unit results electronically to the IREV portal in real time, once Form EC&A had been duly signed, stamped, and countersigned by candidates.
However, the Senate opted to retain the current provision of the Electoral Act, which provides that presiding officers shall transmit results — including the total number of accredited voters and ballot outcomes — in a manner determined by the Commission.
