The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has clarified that the ongoing political friction between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is not a matter for the APC to settle.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Yilwatda explained that the party lacks the mandate to mediate because the two politicians belong to different camps.
He stated, “When it comes to the issue between Wike and Fubara, it is not within my purview as national chairman of the APC. Wike is in the PDP, while Fubara is in the APC.”

Addressing the specific move to remove the Governor from office, Yilwatda maintained that the controversy involves the state’s legislators rather than the FCT Minister.
He noted, “The issue of impeachment is not about Wike. It concerns APC members in the house of assembly. That is something I can speak on. It is an internal issue, and we have in-house mechanisms to resolve it.”
The APC Chairman further advised that such political disagreements should be managed privately, adding, “We don’t conduct these discussions in public. Issues are better resolved through internal processes that require maturity.”
When questioned on whether Wike represents a challenge or a problem for the APC, Yilwatda responded firmly, “Never, never.”
The crisis in Rivers State escalated in December 2025 when Wike publicly came out against Fubara’s second-term ambitions, alleging that the Governor had failed to honor an agreement brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the lifting of emergency rule in the state.
Pro-Wike lawmakers subsequently launched impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing “gross misconduct” and unauthorized spending.
However, the legal process hit a standstill on January 23, 2026, after a Rivers State High Court adjourned the case indefinitely.
The court ruled that the Court of Appeal must first resolve pending appeals involving the Speaker and other assembly members before the impeachment can proceed.
