Barrister Deji Adeyanju, a prominent activist and convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, has lauded Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, for his participation in Monday’s protest at the National Assembly.
Obi joined demonstrators to challenge the Senate’s recent rejection of a mandate for real-time electronic transmission of election results in the newly amended Electoral Act.
Adeyanju, in a Facebook post shared on Monday, February 9, 2026, criticized the Senators’ decision as a betrayal of the public interest and a significant obstacle to achieving genuine electoral integrity in Nigeria.
In his post, Adeyanju emphasized that political leaders must back their words with action against policies that threaten democratic processes. “I commend Peter Obi for joining the protest at the National Assembly today against the new Electoral Act, which I believe is an anti-people law and a major hindrance to true electoral reform in Nigeria. All leaders must take a stand and actively oppose such laws,” Adeyanju wrote.
The protest, held at the entrance of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, was organized by a coalition of civil society groups and pro-democracy advocates.
The demonstrators demanded that the law explicitly require real-time electronic result transmission to ensure transparency. Chanting “Our vote must count,” the protesters urged lawmakers to align Nigeria’s electoral legal framework with international standards.
Peter Obi was seen marching alongside other high-profile activists, including Aisha Yesufu, as they sought to pressure the legislature ahead of today’s emergency Senate session.
