NAHCON Chairman Resigns Amid Controversies

The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Prof. Abdullahi Usman, has resigned from his role following a period of significant internal strife and controversy.

Confirming the news late Monday night, his media assistant, Ahmed Muazu, stated, “Yes, the chairman has resigned. That’s all I can confirm for now.”

Prof. Usman was appointed in 2024 by President Bola Tinubu to replace Jalal Arabi, who was removed during a probe into the 2024 Hajj funds. However, Usman’s own leadership proved turbulent.

His oversight of the 2025 Hajj was marred by claims of administrative failure and financial mismanagement, which triggered severe friction within the commission.

The crisis reached a peak in January 2026, when several commissioners filed a petition with President Tinubu, passing a vote of no confidence in Usman.

The petition specifically accused him of “leadership failure” and “poor administrative conduct,” effectively paralyzing the agency’s leadership.

Despite a high-level reconciliation attempt led by Vice President Kashim Shettima about two weeks ago, tensions remained high.

Prof. Usman’s departure comes at a critical time, leaving a leadership vacuum just four months before the start of the 2026 Hajj operations.
