The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially scheduled the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, with the governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls to follow on March 6, 2027.
The commission’s Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, announced the roadmap during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, February 13, 2026.
This announcement comes despite ongoing uncertainty regarding the amended Electoral Act currently awaiting passage in the National Assembly.

While INEC confirmed it had finalized the timetable as early as February 4, officials warned that certain milestones in the schedule could shift depending on when the legislative updates are eventually legalized.
Under the new leadership of Prof. Amupitan—who succeeded Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in late 2025—the commission is moving forward with early preparations to ensure a seamless process.
However, the potential for legislative changes remains a concern, as the commission noted it had cautioned lawmakers that the schedule of activities might be affected by the timing of the Act’s passage.
