Why My Son Remains In APC — El-Rufai

In a revealing interview with BBC Hausa Service on Thursday, February 12, 2026, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai clarified that his son, Bello El-Rufai, is remaining in the All Progressives Congress (APC) by his own choice, despite his father’s transition to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The remarks came shortly after El-Rufai successfully resisted an attempt by security operatives to detain him at the Abuja airport upon his return from Egypt.

Discussing his son—the current representative for Kaduna North in the House of Representatives—the former governor emphasized that the younger El-Rufai is an independent adult.

My son Bello was elected under the platform of the APC and his electorate seem to be happy with the work he is doing, so since he is an adult of over 30 years, he can make his own choices. Politics is about personal preference,” he explained.

He noted that their differing party affiliations do not cause internal conflict, adding: “If he wants to remain in the APC without getting involved in the party’s wrongdoing because of the home training we gave him, then Alhamdulillah.”
