Court Okays Probe Of Interior Minister’s Academic Record

A Federal High Court in Abuja has cleared the way for an investigation into the academic credentials of the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

On Friday, February 13, 2026, Justice Binta Nyako approved an application filed by activist Emorioloye Owolemi, which seeks to verify the authenticity of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) secondary school certificate held by the minister.

The application, presented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Philemon Yakubu, was brought under the Freedom of Information Act and the court’s civil rules following allegations of inconsistencies in the minister’s academic records.

While Justice Nyako allowed the inquiry into the WAEC certificate to proceed, another judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, rejected a separate request regarding the minister’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate.

Justice Abdulmalik ruled that the applicant had failed to prove the NYSC inquiry was in the “public interest,” describing it instead as a private matter.

Owolemi had sought a court order to force the NYSC to release comprehensive records from 2006, including monthly clearance logs, bank account details for allowance payments, and any documentation regarding an alleged “absconding” or desertion.

The activist also requested all internal memos or disciplinary reports associated with the minister’s service year.

Despite the setback on the NYSC front, the investigation into the school certificate remains active, and Justice Nyako has scheduled a follow-up hearing for March 14, 2026.
