Fubara Removes His Allies From Rivers Government As Part Of Fresh Peace Deal With Wike

In a major political shift, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State removed two of his most prominent allies from the state government on Thursday.

The casualties of the shake-up include Edison Ehie, who served as the Governor’s Chief of Staff, and Benibo Anabraba, who was the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG).

The announcement, made by the Governor’s spokesperson, Onwuka Nzeshi, named Dagogo Wokoma as the new SSG and Sunny Ewule, a lawyer, as the new Chief of Staff.

According to the statement, “The new appointees will be sworn in at 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, 26 February 2026,” with the ceremony scheduled to take place at the “Exco Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt.”

This decision follows the fourth intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the long-standing political feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Political observers suggest that removing these key figures—particularly Mr. Ehie, who famously led a factional group of lawmakers loyal to Fubara during the height of the crisis—may be an attempt by the Governor to satisfy the terms of the latest peace deal.

The move is the latest in a series of steps to stabilize the state following a turbulent period that included a declaration of emergency rule in 2025 and the Governor’s temporary suspension from office.

While the Rivers State House of Assembly recently withdrew its impeachment move against Fubara, the Governor has yet to submit a new list of commissioner nominees following the dissolution of the state executive council on February 12.

For his part, Mr. Wike has expressed optimism regarding the President’s latest intervention, hoping it marks the final resolution of the state’s political crisis.
