Tambuwal Resigns From PDP, Joins ADC

In a significant political shift, the Senator representing Sokoto South and former Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026, addressed to his ward chairman in Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives stated that his departure was effective immediately.

Tambuwal explained that his exit followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations with political associates and supporters,” citing the party’s internal instability as a primary factor.

The Senator noted that “persistent internal crises, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the party” had made it difficult to remain a member, further observing that these conflicts had “weakened the unity and direction that once defined the party.”

Despite his departure, he expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities he had to serve in both the legislative and executive branches.

Tambuwal has now transitioned to the ADC alongside his supporters, stating that his move was driven by a conviction that Nigeria needs a platform founded on “integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development.”

Tambuwal’s political journey has been marked by several high-profile transitions.

He first gained national prominence in the House of Representatives, eventually serving as Speaker from 2011 to 2015.

While serving as Speaker, he famously defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, a move he said was “influenced by political considerations and the future of his state.”

After serving two terms as Governor of Sokoto State (2015–2023)—during which he returned to the PDP in 2018—he most recently sought the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2022 before withdrawing to support Atiku Abubakar.

Following his governorship, he returned to the National Assembly as a Senator, a role he will now continue under the banner of the ADC.
