The former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has clarified that his resignation was a strategic move intended to preserve the peace, stability, and effective governance of the state.
In a formal letter dated March 27, 2026, and addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo emphasized that his departure was entirely voluntary.
He noted that he made the choice to step down to prevent the state from being hindered by political tension, stating, “I have taken this step in the spirit of responsibility and statesmanship, to allow the government and the state to move forward without undue distractions.”

Gwarzo explained that his exit followed extensive consultations and a careful review of the current political environment in Kano.
He was firm in pointing out that his resignation was not a confession of any faults, but a move to protect the state’s democratic values.
He asserted, “This resignation is made voluntarily and should not be construed as an admission of any wrongdoing, but a decision in the interest of public service.”
To formalize the process, Gwarzo cited Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides the legal framework for public officials to resign. He took the opportunity to thank the citizens of Kano, the Governor, the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly, and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for their cooperation during his time in office.
This development follows a period of significant political and legal pressure, occurring just as the Kano State House of Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against him.
