INEC Recognises Wike-Backed PDP Leadership

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Abdulrahman Mohammed.

This specific faction of the main opposition party enjoys the backing of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Following the party’s recent internal developments, updates on the INEC website on Monday, March 30, 2026, confirmed that the electoral body now lists Mohammed as the substantive PDP National Chairman.

This recognition follows only a day after the PDP conducted its national convention at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

During the gathering, Mohammed and his fellow NWC members were elected through the votes of over 2,000 delegates representing the 36 states of the federation.

The convention saw the attendance of several high-profile party figures, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki and ex-governors Ayodele Fayose (Ekiti), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

The PDP remains significantly polarized into two competing factions. Prior to the convention, a rival group led by Kabiru Turaki had approached the Supreme Court in an attempt to “restrain” the Wike-aligned camp from proceeding with the national elective exercise.
