Tuggar To Resign As Foreign Affairs Minister, Join Bauchi Governorship Race – Sources

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is anticipated to step down from his role to contest the Bauchi State governorship in the 2027 elections, according to sources familiar with the situation.

This expected move is in response to a directive from President Bola Tinubu, which mandates that all political appointees aiming for elective office in 2027 must resign by March 31, 2026.

The head of information and public relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Dewan Goshit, officially announced the order in a statement issued on Tuesday.

Tuggar’s likely departure follows the conclusion of the 2026 All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention, where the majority of the party’s National Working Committee members were returned unopposed.

Consequently, public attention has turned toward cabinet members who may have political ambitions but have not yet made a formal declaration.

Supporters of the Minister from Bauchi State, who attended the convention as part of the delegation, indicated that an official announcement of his governorship bid is imminent, citing “growing political support for his potential candidacy.”

Tuggar’s political career includes serving in the House of Representatives for the Gamawa Federal Constituency between 2007 and 2011.

He also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023 under former President Muhammadu Buhari before his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2023.

As the resignation deadline draws near, all eyes remain on the political appointees expected to comply with the directive while preparations for the 2027 elections continue to gain momentum.
