Bayero University Kano (BUK) has confirmed the death of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, the wife of Professor Attahiru Jega, who previously served as the university’s Vice-Chancellor and as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The university shared the news in a somber announcement on Sunday through its official social media channels, saying: “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega.”
According to the school, the funeral (Janazah) was set for the National Mosque in Abuja following the Zuhr prayer on Sunday, April 5, 2026. In its message of condolence, the institution prayed: “May Allah grant her Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive her shortcomings. May He also grant the family the strength and patience to bear this loss. Ameen.”
Lamara Garba, BUK’s Director of Public Affairs, verified the news during a phone conversation, stating: “Yes, it is true. The wife of our former vice-chancellor and former INEC chairman, Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega, has passed away and will be buried in Abuja. May the Almighty Allah forgive her shortcomings.”
The news of her passing has led to a wave of tributes from the academic community and the general public, with many offering prayers for her soul and support for the Jega family during this difficult time.
