The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the tragic death of former Super Eagles striker Michael Eneramo, who reportedly passed away on Friday, April 24, 2026.
According to a report by SCORENigeria, the 40-year-old collapsed while participating in a local football match in Kaduna State.
The incident occurred at the Angwan Yelwa pitch in the Television area of Kaduna. Witnesses noted that Eneramo, who had come on as a second-half substitute, suddenly collapsed without any physical contact or collision.
A source informed the outlet, “He slumped and died right on the spot. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.” He was officially “pronounced dead at the hospital.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep shock over the loss. General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi described the news as “devastating,” adding, “I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
Eneramo was a highly respected figure in African and European football, earning the nickname “Al Dababa” (The Tank) during his prolific stint with Tunisian giants Esperance.
His professional career also saw him feature for top clubs such as Beşiktaş and Sivasspor in Turkey, as well as Lobi Stars in Nigeria.
Internationally, he earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles, notably scoring a vital goal against Tunisia during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.
Before his untimely death, Eneramo had transitioned into coaching and was managing a football academy.
The official Super Eagles social media account paid tribute to the former international on Friday, sharing his photograph with the simple, poignant message: “Rest in peace Michael.”
