Lawan’s remarks followed Shettima’s cancellation of his trip to the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa, which was prompted by an incident at New York’s JFK Airport where a foreign object struck the plane.
According to a statement from the presidency, the aircraft sustained damage, including to the cockpit windscreen. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the details of the incident.

In a statement issued in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Lawan urged the Federal Government to provide Shettima with a new aircraft to prevent any potential tragedies, highlighting that the current aircraft has experienced multiple incidents recently.
“I want to sympathize with the Nigerian Government, especially the office of the Vice President, his crew and staff over the unfortunate incident at JFK Airport in New York, U.S.A.”
