FG Reacts To Report Of Attacks On Nigerians In Libya Over CAF Verdict

The Federal Government has stated that it has not received any reports of arrests or mistreatment of Nigerians in Libya following the recent Confederation of African Football (CAF) decision, which awarded the Super Eagles three points and imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya after an aborted 2025 AFCON qualifier.

The penalty was a response to the poor treatment the Nigerian Super Eagles reportedly endured during the AFCON Qualifier in Libya last month.

A Sunday report by a national newspaper, titled “Libya’s Retaliation: Mass Arrests of Nigerians After CAF Verdict on Super Eagles Incident,” claimed that “in a surprising development, Nigerians in Libya are experiencing mass arrests and fines as a consequence of the CAF ruling.”

However, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, refuted the report, stating that it did not accurately reflect the situation and emphasizing that Nigerians in Libya were conducting their activities as usual.

Part of the statement read: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that the wellbeing of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times.”
