The National Economic Council (NEC) has received position reports from the 36 state governors regarding the establishment of state police.
The meeting, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, was attended by state governors, deputy governors, ministers, and several presidential aides.
Speaking to State House Correspondents after the over four-hour-long meeting, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State stated that the governors expressed strong support for the creation of state police due to the ongoing security challenges in their states.

However, he noted that the NEC has deferred further discussion on the issue until January 2024.
