The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down 150 shops at Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State, following a two-day operation on December 16 and 17, 2024.
In a statement shared on its X handle on Wednesday, the Agency revealed that its team uncovered widespread production and distribution of counterfeit and expired products.
These included beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items like noodles, powdered milk, and yogurt.

NAFDAC further reported that goods worth ₦5 billion were destroyed during the operation.
Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director for the South-East Zone, expressed concern over the persistence of illegal activities in the market, which remains a major hub for counterfeit and substandard products, despite a commitment made by market leaders in December 2023 to tackle counterfeiters.
The statement also highlighted that NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the Agency’s strict stance against such practices and emphasized its continued dedication to protecting public health, working towards a permanent solution to the issue of counterfeit goods in the market.
