Why Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project 10 lanes Will Be Reduced To 6 – Umahi

The Federal Government has announced plans to revise the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, reducing it from 10 lanes to six and lowering the overall cost.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed this during a site inspection of the highway on Friday.

Umahi explained that the revision was prompted by changes in design and additional measures, such as the removal of 10 meters of refuse and backfilling.

He also highlighted that the project’s adjustments were made possible through the generosity of President Bola Tinubu, who facilitated the preservation of certain structures.

Mr Umahi said, “What we are going to do is that we are going to use part of that land to put a service lane for them.

“We are going to be reviewing this contract to accommodate what is not there. There are places like that Landmark where we have to build a retaining wall.”

He further stated that the entire 750km stretch of the road would be equipped with solar-powered streetlights, security cameras, and monitoring points, along with trees to enhance the road’s protection and aesthetics.

Mr. Umahi assured that 20km of the first section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway would be completed, alongside other major road projects, and ready for inauguration by May 29, 2026.

“We have directed controllers to concentrate on a number of projects.

“At least, a minimum of three projects must be commissioned, ” Umahi said.
