Human rights advocate Dele Farotimi has been released from the correctional facility in Ekiti State after fulfilling his bail conditions.
Farotimi was released on Tuesday morning.
Last Friday, a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, granted him bail under conditions that included a N30 million bond, two sureties—one of whom must be a property owner—a surrender of his passport, and a restriction preventing him from granting media interviews upon release.
Following his release, Farotimi spoke to the media, stating that he had never lied about anyone in his life and reaffirmed that everything he had said about individuals or institutions was true.

“It is not ever an easy journey when you are fighting evil, but some years back, before I started this work, God told me that the truth is enough. It is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria, which is the truth. In my war against the evil empire that we all lived in, I have never lied against anyone. If I don’t know, I will say I don’t know,” he said.
On July 2, Farotimi released a book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
Several months after the 116-page book’s publication, renowned legal figure Afe Babalola accused Farotimi of defamation. This led to the human rights lawyer’s dramatic arrest on December 3, when a group of police officers from the Ekiti State Police Command detained him at his Lagos office in a manner likened to a Gestapo operation. Farotimi was then transported to Ekiti State.
In addition to the defamation charges filed by Babalola’s legal team in an Ekiti State Magistrate Court, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, brought 12 further charges against Farotimi at the Ekiti Federal High Court on December 6.
Farotimi was brought before the court on charges of defamation and cyberbullying, following a petition from renowned legal expert and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola.
Babalola claimed that Farotimi defamed him in his book.
The police stated that in the book, Farotimi accused Babalola and other SANs of corrupting Supreme Court Justices.
