His position was further weakened following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in December, which stemmed from policy disagreements, including how to approach potential US tariffs under Donald Trump’s incoming administration.
Trudeau’s resignation coincides with polling data indicating that his party is on track for a significant loss to the Conservative Party in the upcoming election, which must take place by late October.
The Liberals now face the task of selecting an interim leader to serve as prime minister until a special leadership convention is held.
