Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation.
The 53-year-old leader stated that he will step down as head of the Liberal Party, a position he has held since 2013.
Trudeau cited his decision to resign as an opportunity for his party to elect a new leader, while also suspending parliament until March due to ongoing political gridlock.
Having served as prime minister since 2015, Trudeau faced growing pressure from several of his MPs, influenced by poor opinion poll results.
His position was further weakened following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in December, which stemmed from policy disagreements, including how to approach potential US tariffs under Donald Trump’s incoming administration.
Trudeau’s resignation coincides with polling data indicating that his party is on track for a significant loss to the Conservative Party in the upcoming election, which must take place by late October.
The Liberals now face the task of selecting an interim leader to serve as prime minister until a special leadership convention is held.
