Meranda was elected Speaker on Monday following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, whose 10-year tenure came to an end after more than two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly voted to remove him over allegations of misconduct and other offenses.
As Obasa’s deputy until Monday, Meranda was swiftly elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.
Obasa, representing Agege Constituency I, had been a member of the House since 2007 and served as Speaker from June 2015 until his removal in January 2025.
