Brazil Announces Nigeria As BRICS Partner Country

The Brazilian government has declared Nigeria’s formal entrance as a partner country in the multinational group known as BRICS.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Friday.

According to Brazil, the BRICS and Nigeria share common interests in that they both actively seek to improve collaboration among Global South countries and advocate for international organisational reform.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS. It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency,” the statement said.

Brazil presently holds the BRICS chairmanship until 2025, after taking over from Russia on January 1.

Nigeria has become the ninth BRICS partner country, following Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

This category was formed at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan in October 2024.
