Tinubu Gives Former Lagos Commissioner Appointment

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed Dr. Kayode Opeifa’s appointment as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC).

Opeifa previously served as the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola’s government.

He was later nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari to assist in addressing the recurring, renowned, and intractable Apapa bottleneck and surrounding areas.

Opeifa was named Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) to free Apapa from jam by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who headed the team and was subsequently tasked with untangling the horrific traffic gridlock at Lagos ports.

Meanwhile, Opeifa succeeds Ben Iloanusi, who served as acting Managing Director following the departure of former Managing Director Fidet Okhiria on October 18, 2024, at the end of his second four-year term.

Opeifa rose to prominence during his term as Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, where he led measures to upgrade the city’s transportation sector.

His ideas and initiatives not only improved traffic management, but also positioned Lagos as a model for urban transit in Africa.

Buhari eventually nominated Opeifa as Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in recognition of his efforts in the sector.
