The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), confirmed on Thursday that the continued tenure of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is legally valid.
In a statement, Fagbemi clarified that Egbetokun’s appointment began on October 31, 2023.

He further explained that the Police Act was amended before Egbetokun’s retirement age, allowing the officeholder to complete their original four-year term under Section 7(6) of the Act, even after reaching 60 years of age.
As a result, Egbetokun’s tenure has been extended by law until October 31, 2027, to fulfill the full four-year term.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Egbetokun’s continuous stay in office is in line with the provisions of the Police Act amended in 2024 which allow the occupant of the office to enjoy a term of four years effective from the date of his appointment as IGP, in this case, 31st day of October 2023,” Fagbemi said.
He stated that the advisory was important to guide the general public.
