Jide Iwuanyanwu, the son of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the former President-General of Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, shared details about his father’s final journey.
The elder statesman, who passed away on July 24, 2024, at the age of 82, was buried on November 2, 2024.
In an interview with journalists on Sunday, Jide expressed gratitude to the government at all levels for their support during his father’s funeral.

He revealed that his father’s last trip was to Abuja, where he visited Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
“While at the DSS headquarters in Abuja where Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being held, the security operatives at the gate denied him from being driven into the premises. They said the only condition for him to achieve his mission there was for him to walk down and he obliged,” he said.
Mr. Jide shared that after his father’s visit to Nnamdi Kanu, Chief Iwuanyanwu collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately did not survive.
Jide urged the government to fulfill his father’s final wish by securing Kanu’s release, a move that Chief Iwuanyanwu believed would restore peace, revive business activities, end the Monday sit-at-home protests, and free the South East from the difficult times it has endured in recent years.
He also expressed gratitude to the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kanu, who he noted had frequent discussions with his late father about two key matters: Kanu’s release and the establishment of the South East Development Commission.
While thanking the federal government under President Tinubu for establishing the South East Development Commission, Jide appealed to him to grant Kanu’s release, emphasizing that doing so would be a significant tribute to the late respected Igbo leader.
