The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged caution and restraint in dealing with the sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Rejecting calls for Akpabio’s resignation as premature, CAN emphasized the need for respected elders and figures to mediate the dispute in order to preserve the integrity of the National Assembly.
Rev. Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of CAN for the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, described the situation as “shameful and unfortunate,” stressing the need for a peaceful resolution.

“There is a need for elders to step in. Both Akpabio and Natasha have individuals they respect and trust. The National Assembly must take responsibility for addressing this matter,” Hayab said during an interview with journalists in Kaduna on Tuesday.
The Kogi senator had accused Akpabio of making sexual advances toward her, prompting mixed reactions across Nigeria, with some calling for the Senate President to step down.
However, CAN argued that it was too soon to demand Akpabio’s resignation, as no concrete evidence had been presented.

“Any group calling for Akpabio’s resignation should refrain, as no one has been proven guilty in this case. Taking sides will only worsen the situation,” the Christian body stated.
CAN also advocated for a thoughtful and measured response to the allegation, warning against sensationalism.
“While sexual harassment allegations should never be trivialized, Nigeria has moved beyond an era where people can simply claim to be victims. The focus must be on resolving this matter responsibly rather than assigning blame,” the statement read.
The association also urged the media to exercise restraint in their coverage, to avoid further division along gender and regional lines.
It called on all parties to put aside their differences and prioritize national unity, advising lawmakers to focus their efforts on addressing the country’s critical issues, especially since the 2025 budget has already been passed.
