A Pakistani man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting the administrator of a community WhatsApp group who had removed him from the chat, police reported on Saturday.
Mushtaq Ahmed was fatally shot on Thursday evening in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province near the Afghan border, which has experienced significant sectarian violence in the past.
Ashfaq, whose full name has not been disclosed, has been charged with Mushtaq’s murder, according to police records seen by AFP and a local law enforcement official.
The incident began when Mushtaq reportedly removed Ashfaq from the WhatsApp group after an argument. Mushtaq’s brother, in a statement provided to AFP, mentioned that both individuals had agreed to meet and reconcile, but Ashfaq arrived with a gun and opened fire, killing Mushtaq.
Ashfaq’s anger was reportedly fueled by his removal from the WhatsApp group, according to the brother’s statement.
The availability of firearms, tribal customs, and sometimes ineffective law enforcement are factors contributing to the prevalence of such incidents.
