Court Takes Decision On Natasha’s Suit Against Senate

Justice Obiora Egwatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the case filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, to March 25, 2025.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had approached the Federal High Court seeking an order to prevent the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her.

The court granted the order last week, but the Senate proceeded to suspend the senator for six months on Thursday after considering the Committee’s report.

During the court proceedings, lawyers for the first, second, and third defendants informed the court that they had not been served with the relevant documents.

However, Natasha’s counsel, Michael Numa (SAN), clarified that all parties had been served, presenting affidavits of service to the court.

After reviewing the affidavits, Justice Egwatu confirmed that all processes had been properly served to the defendants.

At this point, counsel for the third defendant, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, requested an adjournment to allow time for all the processes to be harmonized.

Other counsels supported this request, believing it would ensure a more efficient hearing on the next adjourned date.

In his ruling, Justice Egwatu granted the adjournment, setting the new hearing date for March 25, 2025, and ordered that all relevant processes be served to the parties before then.

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Peter Nwaebonyi, who was present in court, emphasized the importance of legal services.

He explained that proper service was essential for the parties to study the case and respond accordingly.

He also noted that it was unusual for the court to intervene in Senate matters, stating that the Senate was merely complying with the court’s request as a responsible and law-abiding institution.
