Kano Government Explains Appeal Court Ruling Concerning Emirate Tussle

The Kano State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Haruna Isa Dederi, has clarified that the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on the emirship dispute did not annul the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano.

Speaking to reporters, Dederi emphasized that the appellate court’s landmark judgment on January 10, 2025, upheld the state government’s decision to reinstate Sanusi.

He noted that only the Supreme Court has the authority to overturn that decision.

His comments followed the court’s ruling on a stay of execution application filed by Aminu Baba DanAgundi, a kingmaker aligned with the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.

The court instructed that the current situation remain unchanged until the Supreme Court delivers its final judgment.

Dederi stressed that the Court of Appeal did not invalidate its previous ruling but simply postponed its execution until the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The January 10 decision had overturned an earlier Federal High Court ruling that had invalidated Sanusi’s reinstatement, asserting that the lower court lacked jurisdiction over the matter.

DanAgundi, dissatisfied with the ruling, has taken the case to the Supreme Court.
