Rivers Political Crisis Escalates

The political situation in Rivers State has escalated, marked by the Rivers State House of Assembly’s indefinite adjournment.

Governor Fubara’s attempt to re-present the 2025 budget was thwarted, leading to increased tension.

Governor Fubara sent a letter to Speaker Martin Amaewhule, recalling his failed attempt to present the budget on March 12th, when he was locked out of the assembly.

He emphasized that his actions were in line with a Supreme Court ruling and reminded the Speaker of the assembly’s previous 48-hour ultimatum for the budget presentation.

Despite the ongoing political turmoil, he reiterated his commitment to governing and urged all government branches to adhere to legal and constitutional guidelines.

However, the Assembly, through Speaker Amaewhule’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, announced an “indefinite” adjournment, effectively ending the current legislative session. This decision followed the passage of three significant bills:

  • Rivers State Powers and Privileges Bill 2025: Aims to protect the Assembly’s autonomy and effectiveness.
  • Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission Bill 2025: Focuses on establishing an independent electoral body for local government elections.
  • Rivers State Local Government Bill 2025: Seeks to strengthen local government administration.

Speaker Amaewhule stated that these bills are crucial for the state’s progress.

The indefinite adjournment allows lawmakers to concentrate on implementing these new laws. The Assembly’s statement emphasized their dedication to improving governance and establishing a strong legal framework for the state’s development.
