Niger, under its military junta, has announced its withdrawal from the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), a global group of French-speaking nations.
This decision follows Niger’s suspension from the OIF after a military coup in July 2023.
The OIF had demanded a return to constitutional order and the release of toppled President Mohamed Bazoum, who remains detained.
Niger’s junta has distanced itself from France, instead strengthening ties with neighboring military-led states and Russia.
This shift is also reflected in Niger’s adoption of a new national anthem that emphasizes anti-colonial sentiment, replacing the previous anthem written by a French composer.
