Tension Grips Rivers Community As Ruptured Pipeline Leaks Petroleum Product Unchecked

Residents of Obianime-Ama Community in Okrika Local Government Area, Rivers State, are alarmed by a ruptured PPMC pipeline leaking an unidentified petroleum product.

The incident, occurring on Sunday, has raised concerns about environmental and safety risks.

Eyewitnesses reported the leak began around 2:30 pm near the PPMC facility, and community efforts to contain it have been unsuccessful.

Residents have cordoned off the area and restricted traffic as a precaution, expressing frustration at the lack of immediate response from PPMC. While some suspect vandalism, others attribute the rupture to the pipeline’s age.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed the incident and called for urgent action.

They reported that the leak and subsequent explosion occurred on the PPMC pipeline right of way, linked to maintenance work following a previous incident on March 20, 2025.

YEAC-Nigeria’s volunteers documented the incident with video evidence of flames erupting from the pipeline, which were later extinguished.

They have urged NOSDRA to conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to determine the cause and hold those responsible accountable, referencing the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

The organization stressed the need for thorough investigations into recurring oil spillages and explosions in the Niger Delta to mitigate their environmental and socio-economic impact. Residents are calling for immediate pipeline repairs to prevent further damage.
