Why Nigerians Should Defend Themselves Against Bandits – Danjuma

Retired Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma, a former Minister of Defence, has called on Nigerians to take up the responsibility of defending themselves against bandits and criminals, stating that depending solely on the government for protection is no longer a viable option.

Addressing a public gathering in Takum, Taraba State, on Saturday, Danjuma emphasized that his warning from five years prior remains pertinent, given the escalating insecurity across the nation.

He argued that the recent surge in killings in Benue, Plateau, and other regions of Nigeria has reinforced the validity of his earlier concerns.

“The warning I gave some years ago is still as valid today as it was then. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves.

“We cannot continue to sit and watch while bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs massacre our people unchecked,” he said.

Danjuma, a native of Takum, expressed his disappointment with what he perceived as the government’s failure to provide sufficient security.

He emphasized that it has become necessary for communities to take proactive measures to safeguard their lives and possessions.

“It is now very clear that the government alone cannot protect us. We must stand up and defend ourselves, our families, and our lands before these criminals overrun the entire country,” he added.

His comments follow a resurgence of attacks in Benue and Plateau states in recent weeks, where dozens of lives have been lost and numerous communities have been displaced.
