Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the last general election, has criticized the Tinubu administration’s renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) as a “misplacement of priorities.”
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike oversaw the renovation and renamed the facility after President Bola Tinubu, with the renovation reportedly costing ₦35 billion.
In response, Obi accused the current administration of favoring the rich while the poor suffer.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, as he announced the facilitation of projects worth over ₦6 million and some computers for the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, Obi stated that anything done to promote education is an investment.
He donated ₦6 million for a borehole, solar power, and a laboratory at the secondary school, which gained notoriety after the abduction of schoolgirls by Boko Haram in 2014.
Obi described the ICC renovation as a “waste and misplacement of government priority,” arguing that such funds should have been invested in schools across the country for the welfare and educational benefit of children.
“The N39bn used to renovate the international conference centre would have been better used to issues that would benefit the school children who are in dire need of such investment.
”N39bn would have been used to procure thousands and thousands of computers that would have benefited the schools because the children who are leaders would have benefited from it. They are the leaders of tomorrow.
”As we talk, teachers in the Federal Capital Territory are on strike for three months, protesting months of non-payment of salaries. This was one of the things I did when I was the governor of Anambra State, I made it to the extent that students use the computers, ten students to one computer,” Obi said.
