The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially acknowledged the removal of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
This acknowledgment follows official communication from the PDP, signed by the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, and the newly recognized acting National Secretary, Arc. Setonji Koshoedo.
This development occurs amidst ongoing internal conflict within the PDP. INEC has also confirmed receiving the PDP’s list of governorship candidates for the upcoming Anambra State election, with both Damagum and Koshoedo signing the relevant documents.
The letter, dated May 7, 2025, names Ezenwafor Jude C. as the PDP’s gubernatorial candidate and Hon. Okeke Francis Chukwudi as his running mate.

Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, spokesperson for Nigeria’s opposition lawmakers’ coalition, expressed satisfaction with these developments in a press statement on Monday.
However, he also raised concerns about an alleged plan by Damagum to send a counter letter to INEC.
Ugochinyere claims this would undermine Koshoedo’s authority as acting secretary and potentially disrupt the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May 27, 2025.
Ugochinyere stated, “Let it be known that Sen. Anyanwu’s removal has been formalised by the NWC and INEC has accepted the nomination of the PDP Anambra guber candidate through letters signed by Damagum and the authentic acting secretary, Koshoedo.”
He further warned, “There is an alleged plot by Damagum to secretly send a counter letter to INEC undermining the acting secretary of the party, Arch. Setonji Koshoedo, and aborting the forthcoming NEC meeting.”
In a separate letter to INEC dated May 5, 2025, the PDP formally notified the Commission of Koshoedo’s appointment as acting National Secretary.
The letter stated that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had resolved on April 29, 2025, that the Deputy National Secretary, Hon. (Arc) Setonji Koshoedo, would assume office as Acting National Secretary until further notice, requesting INEC to update its records accordingly and provide him with all necessary support.
Regarding the Anambra governorship election, the PDP informed INEC that Ezenwafor Jude C. was the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the November 8, 2025, election, having won the party’s primary monitored by the Commission, with Hon. Okeke Francis Chukwudi as his running mate.
Ugochinyere commended the PDP’s NWC, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, and Koshoedo for resisting “the traitors” and indicated that the party is preparing to appoint a substantive secretary from the South East region.
He also reiterated his call for the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Senator Anyanwu from the party, accusing them of undermining PDP unity and sabotaging its progress. “Wike and Anyanwu must go. They have consistently worked against the collective interest of the PDP and must be shown the exit door if the party is to survive,” he asserted.
