Keyamo Appointed Chairman Of West African Ministers

Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has been appointed Chairman of the Council of Ministers for the Banjul Accord Group (BAG).

This council comprises ministers of transport and aviation from seven West African nations: Nigeria, Cabo Verde, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

Keyamo’s appointment was announced on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, following the fourth meeting of the BAG Council of Ministers in Abuja.

The session saw high-ranking delegates from all member states in attendance.

As chairman, Keyamo will provide strategic leadership to the council, fostering regional cooperation, harmonizing aviation policies, and implementing key initiatives aimed at enhancing air transport safety, efficiency, and development across the BAG region.

The Banjul Accord Group itself was established to promote sub-regional collaboration for safe and sustainable civil aviation systems in West Africa, adhering to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.

The Abuja meeting also featured extensive discussions on shared air transport challenges, capacity building, infrastructure development, and regional air connectivity.

Keyamo’s appointment is anticipated to bring renewed energy and progress to BAG member states.

In a personal statement, Keyamo attributed this development to the “bold and innovative policies” in Nigeria’s aviation sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, while also acknowledging his predecessor, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Transport and Aviation.
