An examination hall at Government Secondary School, Namnai, in the Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, has collapsed, trapping numerous candidates who were writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The building reportedly caved in following a heavy rainfall and windstorm on Wednesday.

Witnesses stated that local residents swiftly responded, rescuing many students, teachers, corps members, and external supervisors.

“Several students, both male and female, sustained varying degrees of injuries, with some reportedly suffering fractures to their limbs,” a resident disclosed.

“The victims are currently receiving treatment at a nearby Primary Healthcare Centre in the town.”

Another resident, DanAzumi Lauris, told The Punch that the incident occurred around 6 PM, shortly after the second group of students had begun their exams.

“It was the second batch of students still writing their exams that got trapped. The first set had already finished and left,” he said.

“The rain came suddenly with strong winds, and the old classroom structures couldn’t withstand it.”

He added that the windstorm also destroyed several homes in the community.
