Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, has appealed to northerners to support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid to ensure the South-West completes an eight-year presidency in 2027.
Speaking at a press conference in Kaduna on Monday, the former lawmaker, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), argued that backing Tinubu is in the interest of equity.
“In the interest of equity, the south, particularly the south-west, should be allowed to complete the eight-year presidential term,” Sani stated.
He added that for fairness and justice, even if the opposition fields a presidential candidate, they should be from the South-West.

Sani also criticized past northern political leaders for failing to develop the region despite holding power for a combined eleven years. He specifically mentioned late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and former President Muhammadu Buhari, both from Katsina, noting that “Yet the region remains underdeveloped.”
In contrast, he commended Tinubu’s administration for its progressive efforts in the development of the north within its two years in office.
“For those of us from the north, we must acknowledge the gains made by this administration. Those who had the opportunity but failed. Should apologise to the people of the region instead of inciting discontent,” Senator Sani declared.
also warned against the use of tribal and regional sentiments to undermine the Tinubu-led government.
Sani accused some northern political figures of using public grievances as a smokescreen for their frustrations over exclusion from power.
He asserted, “Some northern political figures who failed to deliver during their tenure are now attempting to sow division out of frustration. Northerners must not allow themselves to be manipulated against a government that, in many respects, has outperformed the one that originated from their own region. Let us remember that the south-west stood solidly behind the north during Buhari’s tenure and never posed any significant opposition to his rule.”
