Presidency Reacts After Declaring Living Men Dead In National Honours List

The Presidency has issued an apology for mistakenly including Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Dr. Edwin Madunagu among the posthumous recipients of national honors in President Bola Tinubu’s Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly.

Both individuals are still alive; Fasoranti leads the Afenifere group, while Madunagu is an author and mathematician.

On Thursday, during his Democracy Day address at a joint session of the National Assembly, President Tinubu conferred national honors upon 66 individuals who played significant roles in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy.

While some honors were intended to be posthumous—awarded after death—to figures like Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Humphrey Nwosu, and Kudirat Abiola, Fasoranti and Madunagu were incorrectly placed in this category.

The error was quickly noticed by Nigerians on social media, prompting numerous comments. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, described the mistake as an “oversight” and formally apologized.
