The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a period of thundery and rainy weather across Nigeria from Saturday through Monday.
In its weather outlook released on Friday, NiMet anticipates early morning thunderstorms on Saturday in parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa in the northern region. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are expected over parts of Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
For the North-Central region on Saturday, early morning thunderstorms are predicted for parts of Benue, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Nasarawa. Later, thunderstorms with rains are likely over parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Plateau.
In the Southern region on Saturday, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with morning rains likely over parts of Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa. Isolated thunderstorms with rains are then anticipated over parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Rivers later in the day.
Looking ahead to Sunday, NiMet foresees prospects of morning thunderstorms over parts of Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba in the northern region. Later, thunderstorms with rain are envisaged over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi.
The North-Central region on Sunday is expected to see patches of clouds with sunshine intervals, with early morning thunderstorms likely to affect parts of Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT. Later in the day, thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau states.
For the Southern region on Sunday, morning thunderstorms are expected over parts of Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over most parts of Imo, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers.
On Monday, NiMet predicts morning thunderstorms over parts of Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba in the Northern region. Thunderstorms with rains are then expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Kaduna, and Bauchi later in the day.
In the North-Central region on Monday, patches of clouds with sunshine intervals are forecast, with prospects of thunderstorms and rains over parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, and Niger. Thunderstorms are specifically expected over parts of Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Benue, and Kogi in the afternoon or evening.
Finally, for the Southern region on Monday, a cloudy atmosphere is expected with chances of morning rains over parts of Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Delta, and Bayelsa. Isolated thunderstorms with rains are anticipated over most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet advises the public to take adequate precaution, as strong winds may precede the rains in areas prone to thunderstorms. They urge the public to fasten loose objects to prevent collision, avoid driving under heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches. Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective planning.
