States Declare Holiday To Celebrate Islamic New Year

As Muslims around the world celebrate the Islamic New Year, known as Hijrah 1447, several Nigerian states have declared public holidays to mark the occasion.

The Hijrah commemorates the beginning of the Islamic calendar year.

In separate statements issued on Wednesday and Thursday, the governments of Jigawa, Kebbi, Osun, Katsina, Sokoto, Kano, and Kwara states announced public holidays for either Thursday or Friday.

This allows Muslims to observe the beginning of the new Islamic year.

Amid the celebrations, the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria used the opportunity to call on the nation’s leaders to prioritize justice, good governance, and poverty alleviation.

State-by-State Holiday Declarations

Jigawa: Head of the Civil Service, Muhammad Dagaceri, announced a holiday for residents to participate in celebrations and pray for peace and prosperity.

Kebbi: The state government declared a holiday to allow civil servants and residents to celebrate the new Islamic year, with normal work resuming on Monday, June 30.

Osun: The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Rasheed Aderibigbe, announced a public holiday for Friday, June 27, and urged residents to celebrate joyfully and shun disharmony.

Katsina: Governor Dikko Radda declared Friday a work-free day, congratulating Muslims on the new year and calling for peaceful coexistence. He also urged farmers to use government support responsibly.

Sokoto: Governor Ahmed Aliyu declared Thursday a holiday, urging citizens to use the New Year for sober reflection, self-assessment, and a renewed commitment to Islamic values like humility and accountability.

Kano: Governor Abba Yusuf congratulated Muslims and called for prayers and reflection on the past year, while reiterating his commitment to people-oriented governance.

Kwara: Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq declared Thursday a statewide public holiday, urging Muslims to reflect on the lessons of Hijrah, including sacrifice, peace, and social justice.
