Abubakar Malami, a former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, has announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a personally signed statement titled “To the Good People of Kebbi and Fellow Nigerians,” released on Wednesday, Malami explained that his decision followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection.”
He stressed that his move was driven by “love for our nation and concern for the hardship our people are facing daily,” rather than personal ambition or anger.
Malami painted a grim picture of the nation’s state, stating, “Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives while the government prioritises politics over the safety of its citizens.”

He also highlighted the unbearable economic realities confronting Nigerians, pointing to a sharp rise in the cost of living, escalating food inflation, and increasing youth unemployment. “Our economy is in shambles. Prices of basic food items have tripled. The poor can no longer feed their families. Jobs are disappearing. Young people are hopeless,” he asserted.
The former minister further criticized the current administration’s governance, accusing it of prioritizing political patronage over merit in crucial appointments and national decision-making. “Governance has been abandoned. Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty and not national interest,” Malami said, declaring, “I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die.”
Hailing from Kebbi State, the former justice minister emphasized that his move to the ADC aligns with a broader coalition of political actors seeking a new direction for Nigeria. He stated, “This is why I am joining the ADC — a platform built on the values of justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal. I believe that through this coalition and with the support of Nigerians, we can chart a new course for our beloved country.”
Malami also assured his supporters in Kebbi of his continued commitment to their welfare and political future, stating, “To the people of Kebbi State, I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you. This move is to amplify your voice, protect your interests, and restore hope to our future.”
He concluded his message with a rallying call for all Nigerians to unite for change, asserting, “Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us.”
