Ex-President Buhari Is Ill, Hospitalised Abroad

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is currently receiving medical treatment in London, multiple sources have confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES.

Buhari, who concluded his two terms in office on May 29, 2023, has been abroad since April 2025.

According to family sources, he initially traveled to the United Kingdom for what was described as a routine medical check-up but subsequently fell ill.

A source noted that “There are conflicting reports about when exactly he became unwell. Some say he fell ill in Nigeria and was flown out. Others insist he only took ill after arriving in London for regular medical checks.”

When contacted, Mr. Buhari’s long-time spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the development, stating, “Following your enquiry, I wish to state as follows: It is true that the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell.3 He has been receiving treatment in the UK.”

Shehu added, “You would recall he made it known that he was going for his annual medical check-up. He became ill there, but I am happy to announce to you that he is doing well in his recovery while receiving treatment. We pray for his healthy recovery.”

The specific nature of Mr. Buhari’s ailment and the hospital where he is being treated remain undisclosed.

This development is likely to reignite public attention on his history of extended medical stays abroad during his presidency.

Between 2015 and 2023, Buhari frequently sought medical care in London, a practice that drew widespread public criticism and fueled debates about the quality of healthcare in Nigeria.

Notable instances included trips in February and June 2016 (for an undisclosed ailment and an ear infection, respectively), a 50-day stay in London in January 2017 for “routine medical check-ups” which was later extended without further details, and his longest absence of 104 days in London starting May 2017, which raised significant public concern about his fitness to govern.

During his most intense treatment period, an apartment was reportedly secured near his central London hospital to ensure discreet access.

Sources indicate that his health had significantly improved after he left office in 2023 and quietly retired to his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, but it deteriorated again in April 2025. He has remained overseas for treatment since then.

Mr. Buhari, 82, stepped down in 2023, and his prolonged absence now prompts questions about his recovery and his potential return to Nigeria.
