El-Rufai Announces Coalition Intention To Register New Party As ADC Back-Up

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai has announced that the coalition of opposition parties intends to register a new political party.

This new party will serve as a backup to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which they have recently adopted as their platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.

In an interview with Radio France International (RFI) Hausa service on Wednesday night, El-Rufai explained that the coalition is considering this alternative option to safeguard against potential infiltration and sabotage by the APC, which could destabilize the ADC.

He expressed concern that the APC-led federal government is employing various tactics to undermine opposition parties.

These tactics, he alleged, include luring members with promises of appointments, money, or guaranteed tickets for the 2027 elections.

Furthermore, El-Rufai claimed, “Those who refuse to join the APC face threats of investigations by agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC), or Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).”

El-Rufai suggested that the ruling party is likely to incite long-standing members of the ADC to disown the new entrants, thereby attempting to sabotage the opposition alliance.

He stated, “The opposition parties’ alliance in the ADC is temporary, and we may register a new party as a second option, which we will move to should the ADC be instigated into crisis by the government.”

According to El-Rufai, the APC’s efforts to “kill” the opposition are inherently anti-democratic.

The former governor, a key figure in the new alliance, accused the APC government of actively sponsoring crises within opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as a deliberate strategy to weaken them.1

El-Rufai’s remarks were made shortly after the formal unveiling of the ADC by opposition leaders in Abuja as their chosen coalition platform.
