The Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey 2025 report, conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API), indicates a significant decline in citizens’ trust and confidence in both the government and public institutions across the nation.
The survey found that a staggering 83% of Nigerians expressed little to no trust in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.
Similar sentiments were recorded for the National Assembly, with 82% showing low trust in the legislative body under Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

The judiciary also faced widespread distrust, with 79% of respondents expressing little to no confidence in the institution, encompassing the tenures of both erstwhile CJN Justice Kayode Ariwoola and current CJN Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
Compared to previous editions of the survey (2019, 2021, and 2022), the 2025 data reveals that citizens’ trust and public confidence are at their lowest point.
The API report, unveiled over the weekend in Abuja, further highlighted a weak state of social cohesion in Nigeria, with the index standing at 46.8%.
The survey also revealed a growing sense among Nigerians of being united in a shared struggle, particularly concerning their daily lives and the negative impact of current economic realities.

Citizens consistently pointed to economic hardship, high costs of transportation, goods and services, and a lack of economic prosperity under the Tinubu administration.
API conducted this nationwide Citizens Perception Survey (CPS) with support from the Ford Foundation between January and February 2025.
They completed 5,465 face-to-face household interviews using a Stratified Random Sampling technique, engaging citizens aged 15 and above.
Interviews were conducted in five major languages (English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba), with geographic quotas ensuring proportional representation from all states and senatorial districts.
A key finding from the 2025 survey was that 53% of Nigerians “feel disappointed in Nigeria.”
