The London Clinic, one of the United Kingdom’s most exclusive private hospitals, has drawn significant attention following the death of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari at the facility last Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Buhari and former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar were both admitted to the hospital, though Abubakar recovered and was discharged.
According to Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura, the former president was in high spirits on Saturday, July 12, and preparing for discharge when he suffered a sudden relapse around midday on Sunday. ”
Around 4.30 pm, he gave up the ghost,” Daura told ThisDay. Buhari had reportedly traveled to the UK in April for a routine check-up but subsequently fell ill.
While the exact cause of death was not disclosed, he had battled ill-health for many years, reportedly spending time in the Intensive Care Unit during his admission.
His passing was announced by his former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Sunday afternoon.
Following the news, videos emerged online showing Buhari’s children and relatives visiting The London Clinic, located on Harley Street in London’s medical district.

Accommodation costs vary significantly, from £1,000-£1,800 per night for a standard room to £1,800-£2,500 for a luxury/VIP room, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission costs approximately £3,000 to £3,500 per night.
Another UK-based Nigerian doctor affirmed the hospital’s high standards and its catering to the “super-rich,” emphasizing top-tier medical attention and discretion in its specialized services and private suites.
The clinic is equipped with advanced robotic surgical technology (da Vinci Xi, ExcelsiusGPS, NAVIO) and cutting-edge diagnostic systems.
Its staff includes renowned specialist consultants, many of whom are Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons.
While a National Institutes of Health study suggests a general ward bed can cost around £586.59 per day (excluding other fees), The London Clinic’s website highlights its ICU’s low Standard Mortality Rate (around 0.7), placing it in the top 10% nationally, and consistently high patient satisfaction.
The London Clinic also has provisions for international patients whose treatment is sponsored by their governments, embassies, or companies.
Although the Nigerian Federal Government has not confirmed covering Buhari’s treatment costs, the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and Other Ancillary Matters) Act legally mandates the government to provide for the medical expenses of former presidents and their immediate families, both domestically and abroad.
