1. General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri
Formerly known as Maiduguri Airport, this aviation hub was officially renamed the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport in 2023 by the Tinubu-led Federal Government. This change was part of a broader initiative that saw 14 other federal airports across Nigeria also receive new nomenclatures, as detailed in a June 1, 2023, memo from the Federal Ministry of Aviation.
2. Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre, Maiduguri
Located within the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the 150-bed capacity Muhammadu Buhari Trauma Centre was virtually inaugurated by Buhari himself in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
3. Muhammadu Buhari Academy, Maiduguri
Inaugurated in 2019, the Muhammadu Buhari Academy is a boarding school situated along the Baga Road bypass. It was specifically constructed to provide education for children orphaned by Boko Haram activities. The facility, which boasts 60 classrooms and seven hostel blocks, was initiated by former Governor (now Vice President) Senator Kashim Shettima and completed by the incumbent Governor Babagana Zulum. Its naming is believed to honor the late President’s commitment to combating insurgency in the state and the wider Northeast region.
4. University of Maiduguri’s Senate Building, Maiduguri
Built by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and inaugurated on Monday, July 16, 2018, the University of Maiduguri’s Senate Building was named after Buhari. This prominent edifice is situated near the institution’s main entrance and is visible from the road outside the campus.
5. Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri (Formerly University of Maiduguri)
Established in 1975 as one of Nigeria’s second-generation universities under the Third National Development Plan (1975-1980), the University of Maiduguri was created by the Federal Government to serve as a major higher education hub. It began with 743 students across three faculties and expanded to six by 1978.
Most recently, on July 17, President Bola Tinubu announced at a Federal Executive Council meeting that the University of Maiduguri would be renamed the Muhammadu Buhari University.
This decision, according to President Tinubu, is a gesture of government recognition and honor for Buhari’s dedicated service to the nation.
