The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has advised residents of Edo State, especially those in low-lying areas, to relocate to safer grounds due to the impending risk of severe flooding.
The State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Gbenga Agun, issued this warning in Benin on Thursday through a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Efosa Ogbebor.
Agun’s alert follows a prediction from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) indicating that heavy rainfall and flooding are expected to persist through September and potentially into October.

“We are calling on all residents in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures and relocate while there’s still time. It is better to act now than wait until lives and property are lost,” Agun stated, emphasizing the urgency of mitigating the effects of this natural disaster.
He highlighted that the increased frequency and intensity of July’s rains necessitate immediate attention and targeted sensitization in vulnerable communities.
The NSCDC has already mobilized its Disaster Management Unit and instructed Divisional Officers in high-risk areas, including Agenebode, Udaba, Anegbete, Ukpeko, Illushi, and Oji, to commence public enlightenment campaigns.
These officers are directed to educate residents on flood preparedness, safe evacuation strategies, and methods to minimize losses.
The NSCDC boss called on community leaders and local governments to support this initiative, affirming the Corps’ readiness to collaborate with local authorities and traditional rulers to ensure residents are not caught unprepared.
He also advised residents to remain vigilant, report early signs of flooding, and adhere to all official directives to reduce the humanitarian impact of the seasonal floods.
