FG Reacts To “Nigerians Must Go” Protests In Ghana

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has addressed a recent viral video depicting Ghanaian protestors calling for the deportation of Nigerians from Ghana.

The protestors in the video accused some Nigerians of criminal behavior and of acting in ways that clash with Ghanaian societal values.

In response, NIDCOM Chairman/CEO Abike Dabiri-Erewa issued a statement condemning the sweeping generalization of Nigerians as criminals. She labeled such accusations as both unfair and dangerous.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that while a small number of individuals may indeed be involved in illicit activities, the overwhelming majority of Nigerians residing in Ghana are law-abiding citizens who make valuable contributions to Ghanaian society.

She said, “Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fish out and face the necessary sanctions.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and such in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”

The NIDCOM Chairman/CEO urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid any form of violence, emphasizing that the issue is being addressed through diplomatic channels.

She cautioned both Nigerians and Ghanaians against using inflammatory language, as it could worsen the situation.

Dabiri-Erewa also advised Nigerians to ignore circulating videos that falsely claim their shops and properties are being destroyed by Ghanaians.

She said, “There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost prevent any reprisal attacks”.

The NIDCOM boss commended the High Commissioners of both Ghana and Nigeria for their diligent work in managing the situation.

She added that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs has also been in contact with Ghanaian authorities, taking proactive steps to address the issue.
